ALBANY — The building at 241 Western Ave., the site of a fire on Thursday that killed two people and injured two others, did not have a residential occupancy permit and had not been inspected by the city’s codes department in years.
Albany police on Saturday released the names of the two people who died from injuries they suffered in the fire. They were Sahaja Udumala, a 24-year-old woman, and a man named Anvesh Sarepalli. Both people had been receiving treatment at the Westchester Medical Center Burn Center.
Richard LaJoy, the director of the city’s Department of Building and Regulatory Compliance, said the building’s landlord had been cited in 2021 for not having the permit, a document that is required to rent apartments to tenants. The landlord, a person listed in city records as Jamil Mohanad, had been referred to the city’s Corporation Counsel office for prosecution in 2021, but no action had apparently been taken…
