Residential occupancy questions surround fatal fire in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Two people have died as a result of injuries sustained in that Western Avenue house fire last week. Now, paperwork obtained by NEWS10 suggests the house should not have been occupied in the first place.

Those two fatalities were two Indian nationals who were UAlbany alumni. They died after they sustained severe burns from that house fire that happened at 241 Western Avenue.

That fire broke out on Thursday, just before noon, amid windy and snowy conditions. The two fatalities were later identified as Anvesh Sarepelli and Sahaja Udumala.

NEWS10 has learned the 241 Western Avenue property owner Jamil Mohanad had faced code violations. There were citations related to electrical equipment installations that were resolved in 2021.

However, according to the City of Albany’s Citizen Self-Service Portal, Mohanad did not have a current Residential Occupancy Permit (ROP). That means no tenant should have been living in the home…
