Schenectady County extends Code Blue, Albany County declares Code Blue Extreme

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Ahead of cold weather expected throughout the Capital Region this week, Schenectady County officials confirmed on Monday that their Code Blue issued over the weekend has been extended through 7 a.m. on December 12. County Executive Daniel McCoy also announced that a Code Blue Extreme will be in place in Albany County on Monday night.

Code Blues expand hours and eligibility for shelter services when temperatures are forecasted to fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Code Blue Extremes are issued when temperatures, with windchill, are expected to drop under 10 degrees, according to the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS).

Residents are encouraged to always wear warm clothing when outside in the cold, prevent potential carbon monoxide poisoning by never using ovens or grills inside to heat homes, and to stay wary of signs of hypothermia, such as shivering, drowsiness, and confusion.
