New details emerge about history of building where two UAlbany graduates died in fire

New details have emerged about last week’s deadly fire on Western Avenue in Albany that killed two University at Albany graduate students.

City officials expected 241 Western Avenue to be demolished, but it remains standing as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.

According to the Mayor’s Office, the Albany Fire Department responded to a burned outlet at the address in March 2021. The city cited the owner for the outlet and for not having a required residential occupancy permit.
