East Greenbush superintendent starts driving a school bus due to driver shortage

EAST GREENBUSH — When Superintendent Kurtis Kotes took over this summer, he learned that the East Greenbush school district had not succeeded in hiring enough bus drivers.

So, he decided this fall to spend every lunch break training to drive a bus so he could fill in when a driver is out.

“We were actually 10 drivers short,” which represents about 10% of the department, he said. “So, we were plugging it together with retired drivers who were willing to come back, our mechanics, assistant directors… there was simply no one” willing to commit to the job…
