Appeals court says complaint against Albany Medical Center firings can’t be amended

ALBANY — The state’s second-highest court on Thursday unanimously denied a motion by two former Albany Medical Center employees to amend their complaint against the hospital.

The ruling comes just one week after the hospital announced new leadership, and marks the latest development in a 2022 lawsuit, which alleges racist and discriminatory behavior by the hospital in its firing of a community activist and two executives that helped hire her.

In February 2022, Jamaica Miles was hired as director of community engagement. Hospital executives James Kellerhouse and Laura Liebman were part of the hiring team. During the hiring process, Kellerhouse inquired with human resources if Miles’ prior arrest for her participation in a Black Lives Matter protest precluded her employment. The charges had been dismissed, and the arrest did not affect the hospital’s ability to employ her. Miles was subsequently offered the job.
