Thousands lose power as rain, heavy wind hit upstate

ALBANY — Wind gusts knocked down trees and limbs across the Capital Region and other parts of upstate, leaving thousands of utility customers without power.

In the area around Albany, National Grid reported that about 5,000 customers were without power by late morning. Central Hudson removed more than 1,000 customers who were without service in Ulster and Dutchess counties. New York State Electric & Gas reported outages in the Catskills, Hudson Valley and Rensselaer and Washington counties.

Thousands of additional outages were reported across upstate, with National Grid reporting outages in the Buffalo area and the Adirondack Mountains. Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington was closed after high winds with gusts topping 110 mph were recorded at the mountain. The winds were blamed for outages in that part of the Adirondacks…
