Albany man shot by police charged with arson, strangulation

ALBANY — An Albany man who was shot by police last week after he allegedly opened fire on two officers has now been accused of starting a fire at an apartment building, breaking into an apartment, strangling a woman and threatening her child.

Devante Wadjas, 29, has been charged with one count each of fifth-degree arson and second-degree strangulation, two counts of second-degree burglary and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. He was arraigned Tuesday on a sealed indictment before Judge Andra Ackerman in Albany County Court.

The indictment accuses Wadjas of starting a fire at an apartment on Tyler Trice Terrace on Dec. 15, according to the district attorney’s office. The following Thursday, Dec. 18, Wadjas “over several hours and several visits” allegedly broke into the apartment, strangled a woman and “put her child at risk of injury,” the district attorney’s office wrote in a news release…
