ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Albany added a new amendment to its city charter on Tuesday evening— formally enshrining the article of “Civic Inclusion and Rights Protection” into law.

The new law adds an article to the city charter called “Civic Inclusion and Rights Protection.” it says the city must treat everyone with dignity and respect — and that no city policy can weaken existing anti-discrimination laws.
“It’s meant to really summarize in one place what we’re all about and to say that, you know, we live by those standards and there’s an obligation of by city departments as well in their practices and day to day operations to make sure that we are welcoming, inclusive and nondiscriminatory in our practices.” explained Albany Common Council Member Richard Conti.
Council Member Richard Conti introduced the legislation, and said that it reflects the many communities that call Albany home. Conti continued, “We are a very diverse city with a lot of different communities, LGBTQ community, you know, ethnicity, the immigrant community, religious communities. In terms of, you know, another area where we see a lot of problems today is discrimination,”
