ALBANY — A major Capital Region orthopedic practice has been fined $500,000 through a settlement with Attorney General Letitia James’s office for failing to secure patient information that was stolen by hackers in December 2023.
OrthopedicsNY, or OrthoNY, which has clinics in Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls and other locations, was fined for “exposing the information of more than 650,000 patients and employees,” according to James.
Hackers were able to gain remote access to the company’s network using compromised login information and downloaded the unencrypted “private personal and health care information” of patients and employees, including Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers or passport numbers for about 110,000 people, according to James…
