UAlbany’s RNA Institute receives $50M boost for disease research

We’ve all heard of and at least know something about DNA, but what about RNA? There’s an RNA Institute in Albany where researchers are working to learn more about how these molecules can be used to treat and prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, and muscular dystrophy. Now they’re getting a financial boost that could help.

Inside this building on the UAlbany campus is the RNA Institute—an entire building devoted to a little molecule that scientists say acts as a message from DNA and makes important proteins in the body.

“Actually, if you think about a molecule that can do everything, that’s RNA,” said UAlbany RNA Institute Director Andy Berglund. Berglund says RNA is involved in at least 30% of all diseases, especially genetic diseases…
