Severe snowstorm prompts Code Blue alerts in Capital Region, shelters extend resources

As a severe snowstorm blankets the Capital Region, counties have issued Code Blue alerts, many extending until Monday, urging residents to seek shelter from the dangerous conditions. The New York State Police have warned of hazardous driving conditions due to the heavy snowfall, while the City Mission of Schenectady is stepping up efforts to provide refuge for those in need.

The City Mission of Schenectady is not only offering a warm bed but also a chance for a fresh start. “We had well over 100 men, women and children,” said Michael Saccocio, executive director of the City Mission. Despite reaching full capacity on Saturday night, Saccocio encourages people to come, assuring them they will find a place to sleep, even if it’s not at their shelter.

“You have City Mission and a few other organizations working under the leadership of County Social Services. All pulling together to make sure no one is left outside in severe weather,” he said…
