Schenectady grocery store moves closer to opening with signed lease

SCHENECTADY — Plans to open a full-service community-owned grocery store later this year near the heart of downtown are progressing on several fronts as the finances for the long-awaited project begin to fall into place.

The Electric City Community Grocery (ECCG), formerly the Electric City Co-op, has formally signed a lease to operate the store in the historic Wedgeway building at the corner of State Street and Erie Boulevard. The building, which fell into disrepair, is currently undergoing major renovations.

“This milestone reflects years of planning and collaboration among our cooperative, the city of Schenectady, Schenectady County, Metroplex, Cass Hill Development (owners of the Wedgeway Building), and our growing membership,” said Eric Johnson, board president of Electric City Community Grocery, in a statement. “We intend to deliver a high-quality, energy-efficient grocery store that meets community needs and is a fun, interactive community gathering space.”…
