Fort Johnson fire department closes after town declines contract renewal

FORT JOHNSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Fort Johnson Volunteer Fire Company ceased operations on December 31, 2025, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The closure comes after the town of Amsterdam declined to renew the department’s contract in October.

The Tribes Hill Fire Department and the Hagaman Fire Department have extended their coverage areas in order to maintain fire protection in Fort Johnson, the sheriff’s office said. The new boundary line is reportedly located in the area of Steadwell Road and Lepper Road.

“The 911 Dispatch Center knows which department to send based on address,” the sheriff’s office said. “Residents should expect little to no disruption in emergency response services, and 911 dispatch procedures remain unchanged.”

When asked if the restructuring will strain emergency response resources, sheriff Jeffery Smith told NEWS10 that it is possible if multiple incidents happen at once. However, the county’s fire departments are a part of a mutual aid plan, so support from other districts is available if needed.

“Both Tribes Hill and Hagaman Fire Departments were already responding into portions of this area through mutual aid agreements with Fort Johnson, and both departments have formally agreed to assume the additional call volume moving forward,” the sheriff’s office said…
