Colonie senior Vincent Mastrianni earns second place at Eastern States Classic

HALFMOON — Colonie senior Vincent Mastrianni was just one magic trick short of walking away from the Eastern States Classic wrestling tournament as a champion.

After putting together a stretch of dramatic victories to reach the 126-pound championship match on Saturday afternoon, Mastrianni came away with a second-place finish, as he was pinned by Longwood’s Anthony Lalagala Ryan in the final bout.

“This is my hardest tournament of the year. [In sections and states] there’s big schools and small schools, but here there’s no divisions. It’s just weight, and it’s all about who’s the best,” Mastrianni said. “The main reason I come here is to compete against the best kids out there and show who I am as a wrestler. I think I showed that today, but I just couldn’t get it done.”…
