Historic Columbia County bridge closed indefinitely due to deterioration

STUYVESANT — A historic bridge closed indefinitely at 1 p.m. Monday after the state found additional structural issues during an annual inspection.

Traffic will be rerouted until the bridge is repaired, a process that could take several months.

The Stuyvesant Falls Bridge, which spans the Kinderhook Creek in northern Columbia County, was constructed in 1899 and has experienced structural issues over the last several decades. These resulted in multiple temporary closures for repairs. A 2014 study commissioned by the county found the bridge was “in poor condition,” and the latest state Department of Transportation report, conducted in September, gave the bridge three “red flags.”…
