Century-old Schenectady church to be converted into affordable apartments

SCHENECTADY — As the city looks to provide more affordable housing, a century-old, two-story church in the city’s Hamilton Hill neighborhood that has been vacant for decades may, in the future, help with that endeavor.

The brick structure at 535 Schenectady St. and an empty parcel next to it, located at 529 Schenectady St., will soon be converted into apartments, some of which will be offered as affordable housing.

The city, which has owned the vacant lot since 2001 and the church since May 2023, is in the process of selling both properties to Casale Investing LLC, according to a recent news release issued by Mayor Gary McCarthy’s office.
