Schenectady showdown with Office of Court Administration could plunge city into financial peril

SCHENECTADY — Mayor Gary McCarthy is sounding the alarm that the state could take control of the city’s finances sometime in late spring if Schenectady fails to reach a compromise deal to end its showdown with the state Office of Court Administration over the conditions of the municipal court facilities.

McCarthy, in a recent interview, maintained that he’s still optimistic that ongoing mediation with the agency will result in an agreement and avert plunging the city into deeper financial straits than it’s already facing.

“I am hopeful that common sense will prevail, and we’ll be able to come to an agreement that everybody can live with,” he said, describing the OCA’s push for what he described as a “palatial (and) extravagant court facility.”…
