Stec questions DOCCS decommissioning of Moriah Shock

Since its closure in 2022, heat, electric and security have been maintained at Moriah Shock in order to more easily facilitate the location’s reuse. — ALBANY | Sen. Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) wrote Gov. Hochul Jan. 23 to request she put an end to DOCCS’ ongoing effort to decommission the Moriah Shock facility.

Presently, the department has contracted a vendor to end the facility’s heat, electric and security infrastructure. In his letter, Stec highlighted the negative impact shutting these services down will have on future efforts to maintain the facility and put it into reuse.

“Sometimes it feels like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing when it comes to our state government,” said Stec. “Governor Hochul rightly has proposed a constitutional amendment to get Moriah Shock back into use sooner than later. By decommissioning the facility, DOCCS is undermining that effort. This is something we’ve already seen with Camp Gabriels. Decommissioning that facility has caused irreparable damage…
