HUDSON — The number of homeless people in the Twin Counties continues to climb, according to preliminary numbers from an annual count.
The annual point-in-time count is undertaken each January by local nonprofits across the country that work with the homeless. It counts two separate groups: unsheltered people — those sleeping in places such as bus stations, abandoned buildings, cars, parks and encampments — and those in emergency or transitional housing.
This year’s count was on Jan. 22. Though the data are not fully compiled, they showed there were at least 17 unsheltered people in Columbia and Greene counties that night, nearly triple last year’s total. The number of people in emergency and transitional housing was not yet available, but last year’s total was 245 — the highest number in 15 years…
