ASK CBS6: Owner baffled after empty apartment’s energy bill just as high as lived-in unit

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WRGB) — A Schenectady homeowner is questioning why his energy bills remain nearly identical for two apartments — even though one of them has been vacant for months.

Roopnarine Mohabir owns a two-family home in Schenectady with separate electric meters, furnaces, and hot water tanks for each unit. While he lives in the upper apartment, the lower unit has been unoccupied for roughly four months. Despite that, Mohabir said the energy charges for both apartments have been almost the same.

Walking through the vacant lower unit, Mohabir pointed out empty rooms and unused outlets. Appliances are disconnected, including the refrigerator and stove, he said…
