COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Cohoes City Council is considering a proposal to charge property owners whose storefronts sit empty for more than four months. Local businesses say they’ve felt the impact of vacant businesses downtown.
One of the business owners of Vintage Addiction & Co Pam Skaarup says she’s noticed the trend of vacant storefronts over time. She hopes that can change.

“We’ve seen a number of businesses go in and out because they can’t sustain, because there’s really no foot traffic,” said Skaarup. “Cohoes is a beautiful city, very historic and I think it could come alive again.”
The Cohoes City Council has taken notice of the vacant storefronts and is considering a proposal to charge property owners with empty windows. If vacant buildings aren’t registered after not having a tenant for four months, they could be feed $50 a day.
