Guptill’s Arena celebrates 75th Anniversary

COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Guptill’s Arena has been a Capital Region tradition for generations, serving ice cream in the summer and keeping families roller skating all year long. This year, the family-owned roller-skating rink is celebrating 75 years in business.

For generations, families have been rolling through Guptill’s, creating memories together on the rink. Owners Charles “Skip” Guptill and his son Wes Guptill said that the 75-year-old business is more than a job, but a part of their family.

“My father built everything. And then I was 11 years old when it opened in 1951. And I’ve been here ever since.” said Co-Owner Skip Guptill.

They said that the rink has become a go-to for families for generations. “We see a lot of grandmothers bringing their grandchildren because when they came, their moms and their grandmothers, now 75 years is a long time, their moms brought them. And now that the grandmothers are coming, then their kids are coming. It just goes on down the line.” explained Co-Owner Wes Guptill.

While families and friends gather at Guptill’s to strap on a pair of skates, the Guptill’s family said that the real tradition is time spent together. Wes continued, “There’s very few things that families can do together: mom, dad and the kids. But everyone can skate together, they’re holding hands, they’re laughing. It’s about those memories that will last a lifetime.”…
