ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — An Albany County Judge sentenced an Albany man on Wednesday to seven years in jail for a 2020 shooting and fleeing prosecution. The Albany County District Attorney’s Office said Kareem Alston, 37, was also sentenced to five years of probation.

Alston pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon last December. Through his guilty plea, Alston admitted to shooting at a group of people standing near the intersection of Ontario Street and Third Street. Authorities said no one was injured in the shooting, and they arrested Alston shortly after the incident.
During sentencing, Alston said he believed his sentence was too harsh and that he was firing in self-defense. He also said that he fired at the group after being called to the area by his sister because someone threatened her.
The U.S. Marshal Task Force arrested Alston in North Carolina on November 27, 2023, after he failed to appear in court for the shooting due to fleeing the state.
