Carlton was convicted of attacking Stratton at the Imperial Motel on State Street in Schenectady during a dispute on July 21, 2024. Detectives found that Carlton beat Stratton repeatedly over the course of three hours, causing brutal injuries to her torso, head, ribs, liver, pancreas, and lungs.

Stratton, Carlton’s 49-year-old girlfriend at the time, was declared dead at the scene. Carlton, who fled the scene after committing the murder, was taken into custody by Schenectady Police in August 2024. Assistant District Attorneys Nicolaus McDonald and Elizabeth Woodward prosecuted the case with assistance from investigator John Madden.
