Upstate NY tow truck driver, auto dealer sentenced for car theft scheme

A tow truck driver and an auto dealer have been sentenced in a car theft scheme in Upstate New York.

John F. Rivers, 44, of East Greenbush, and Robert A. Pitcher, 58, of Broadalbin, were charged with more than 30 felonies for stealing and selling vehicles towed from parking lots in the Capital Region, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James.

James said an investigation by her office and New York State Police determined that Rivers used his towing company’s contracts with local businesses to steal vehicles left overnight in parking lots. He towed them to scrap yards and used car dealerships, including Pitcher’s business, and illegally sold the vehicles…
