Empire State Weekly: Lawmaker pushes for transparency in utility prices

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Utility prices are under increased scrutiny as state residents report rising bills. These costs have caught the attention of both citizens and lawmakers, the latter of whom have proposed several regulations to lessen the impact of the price hikes.

This week on Empire State Weekly, Assemblyman Phil Steck, a Democrat representing the 110th Assembly District, explained the changes he wants to see within the state’s energy system. He called for reforms that would prevent costs from being passed directly to consumers.

“The process at the public service commission is defective,” Steck said. “This is always a classic problem in government, where the regulators get captured by the industries that they’re supposed to regulate. We have legislation that would add two consumer advocates to the public service commission, so that we have people who are receptive to the concerns of the consumers.”

Also this week, SUNY Chancellor John King addressed a recent SUNY progress report which touted the system’s success in increasing enrollment and closing budget gaps. The report was released alongside a finding from the state’s Comptroller suggesting that students still face significant challenges in affording higher education…
