ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — 2025 was a rare off-year for Section 2 boys wrestling, having no state champions. That would not be the case this year, though, as a pair of Capital Region grapplers found their way to the top of the podium at the NYSPHSAA individual championships, with another five finishing in second place.
Ryker Cox, a junior from Coxsackie-Athens, and Gabe English, a senior representing Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh, became Section 2’s newest state champions Saturday night at MVP Arena. Cox captured the Division 2, 165-pound title as the weight class’ top seed, defeating Cadin Creeley by a 7-4 decision in the finals. Gabe English avenged his runner-up finish at 152 pounds last year and ran the table as the three-seed in the D-2, 175-pound bracket this time around. He took down Connor Wilson in a 5-1 decision in the championship match.
