Court upholds conviction of man who left child to freeze outside

(WNYT) — A New York appellate court has upheld the conviction of Kevin Cox for the murder and assault of his girlfriend’s six-year-old son in Troy.

Cox was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault after locking Davonte Paul outside in freezing temperatures on February 9, 2020, to punish him for misbehaving. While the young boy sat on the snow- covered back deck wearing only his pajamas, Cox smoked marijuana and went to bed.

The next morning, Cox found the boy’s unconscious body frozen to the deck. After prying the child from the deck with a shovel, Cox brought him inside, and tried to revive him in the bathtub, and called the boy’s mother. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died of multiple organ failure due to hypothermia…
