Schenectady man sentenced to jail on animal cruelty charge

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Schenectady man will spend six months in Schenectady County Jail after pleading guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals. Juwan Grier, 27, will also have five years of probation after his release and must not own or possess any animals for 50 years.

Grier admitted that on June 25, 2025 he intentionally pushed his 4-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer down a fire escape attached to his second floor apartment. He then brought the dog to the VCA Shaker Animal Hospital in Latham for treatment.

Hospital staff found the puppy had serious injuries, including a broken tibia and fibula of his right hind leg, a broken jaw, and rib fractures in various stages of healing. They called police based on Grier’s statements to employees.
