Here’s how the population of every city and town in the region has changed since the pandemic

Has your local grocery store felt emptier or more crowded than it did a few years ago? Maybe you’ve noticed changes around your city or town — in classrooms, on sidewalks, or in the mix of people you see every day.

The Times Union analyzed the American Census Survey’s newly released 2024 five-year population data, collected from 2020 to 2024, for 10 counties in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley: Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Ulster, Warren, and Washington counties.

The city of Albany in Albany County is the region’s population heavyweight — and the only one topping 100,000 residents. The town of Colonie in the same county follows with about 86,000 people.

“It’s a big deal for the city of Albany to top 100,000 residents,” said Mark Castiglione, executive director of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission.
