Over 5 pounds of fentanyl, $520K, guns seized in Schenectady arrests

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office reported that two arrests were made last week after a yearlong drug trafficking investigation. Marisol Colon-Morales, 58, and Eric Rivera, 49, are facing several felony charges.

After receiving a tip reporting possible drug sale activity at the Summit Towers complex on Albany Street in Schenectady, law enforcement executed search warrants for two apartment units on February 24 following several months of surveillance work. During the searches, officers reportedly recovered over five and a half pounds of fentanyl, around $520,000 in cash, and two illegally-owned firearms.

The investigation, dubbed “Operation Summit Sweep,” resulted in Colon-Morales and Rivera being taken into custody last Tuesday. The operation also included a search being conducted in a Honda Accord registered to Colon-Morales. The two now face the following charges:

Colon-Morales

  • First-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance – narcotic with intent to sell

Rivera

  • Second-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance

“This case represents one of the most significant drug and cash seizures in the history of Schenectady County. The operation marks a major disruption to fentanyl distribution throughout Schenectady County and its surrounding communities,” the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office stated. “Removing this quantity of fentanyl from circulation may have prevented thousands of potentially lethal doses from reaching the streets.”

The Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office, the Schenectady County Street Crimes Task Force, the Rotterdam Police Department, and the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force assisted the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office with the operation.
