Rotterdam to begin rotating fire safety inspection schedule

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Town officials in Rotterdam have announced a new plan for fire safety enforcement measures at multiple-dwelling and non-residential occupancy properties. To comply with New York State laws, the town is establishing its own code-enforced Property Maintenance Inspection Program.

The town said all buildings with three or more units and commercial, industrial, assembly, and similar occupancies are subject to periodic fire safety and property maintenance inspections as part of the new program. Having never conducted systematic inspections before, the town reported that it used to perform them on an incidental basis.

“This approach balances our Town’s obligation to comply with State law and our goal of rewarding responsible property owners who maintain their buildings in good condition,” Town Supervisor John Polimeni said. “We appreciate the cooperation of property owners as we move through this process.”

  1. Complete a Fire Safety and Property Maintenance Registration./ Inspection Application, which asks for basic information about the building, its ownership, use, size, and fire-protection systems within two weeks of receiving the letter.
  2. Pay the applicable inspection fee. Multi-dwelling fees are $75 per unit.
  3. Schedule an inspection time with the Rotterdam Department of Public Works/ Building Department. The property owner must be at the property to let the inspector into all units.
  4. Fix any violations the inspector finds by the date listed in the inspection report. Fees may apply for re-inspection.

Property owners should receive a letter explaining what they need to do in the coming weeks. Above is a list of some measures they will need to take. Anyone with questions about the inspections should contact supervisor John Polimeni at (518) 986-3744.
