ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Local healthcare workers declared a “code red,” demanding that New York state address federal cuts in the state budget this year. They expressed concerns that without investments in nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities, these places could lose beds or even shut down.
This is in part due to longstanding concerns of low Medicaid reimbursements and impacts on H.R. 1.
“I’ve been here since I was 17 years old. And all my residents know me by name,” said Portia Wilcox, who has worked in a local nursing home for 23 years. “So if you don’t know anything else about caring about residents, we’re their only companion if no one else comes.
