A disturbing animal cruelty case out of Rensselaer County is drawing strong reactions after authorities say animals were found living in horrific conditions.
Police Started Investigating in January
New York State Police in Brunswick have arrested 35-year-old Edward J. Madlin of Mechanicville, charging him with 12 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance under the Agriculture and Markets Law.
According to the report, the investigation began in January after authorities were alerted that a cow and multiple horses were being kept in unsafe conditions at a property along State Route 40 in Schaghticoke.
Alarming Discovery
According to police, the animals were living without adequate food, water, or proper hoof care. Even more shocking, manure buildup inside the stalls had reached between two and six feet deep — so severe that the Melrose Fire Department had to assist in physically removing some of the animals.
In total, 11 horses and one cow were rescued from the property. Thanks to the efforts of first responders and local community members, the animals were safely relocated to several rescue organizations, where they are now receiving proper care.
