Montgomery County, NY (WRGB) — A report of a suspicious man who had slept in a barn and was then seen trying to get into a vehicle led to an arrest after a multi-agency search in Montgomery County.
37-year-old Matthew Lewis from Fort Plain was taken into custody after Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call March 27, 2026, at about 10:47 a.m. about a man who had slept in the caller’s barn the night prior and was now attempting to get into the caller’s vehicle. Deputies and New York State Troopers were sent to a residence on Klemme Road in the Town of Root.
After arriving and speaking with the caller, deputies learned the man had left on foot and was identified as Lewis. Authorities said Lewis was also wanted out of Amsterdam Court for running from that court the night prior…
