SUNY Cobleskill officer awaits heart transplant after heart failure found during surgery

A routine gallbladder surgery last Fall turned into a life-changing diagnosis for SUNY Cobleskill police officer Ray Haugen, of Rotterdam. He is now working from home while awaiting a heart transplant.

Haugen went in for gallbladder removal about six months ago, but doctors discovered during the procedure that he was in severe heart failure. “It was one of the scariest things, was just hearing that I had turned blue at some point during the surgery,” Haugen said.

When he woke up, he said he immediately realized something had gone wrong. “First thing was when I regained consciousness, I was intubated with the tube. So I knew something didn’t go as planned at some point,” he said…
