Man who lost home in a fire looks to laugh for a change

EAST NASSAU, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A devastating house fire that took everything from Michael Andrews started in his basement when lithium-ion batteries that were left plugged in overnight suddenly exploded. Andrews woke up to his home already in flames.

“My daughter was asleep on the couch. [I] ran down there and got her through the flames, trying to breathe, and got her out,” said Andrews. “Then I got rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt or anything, and no one got burned, but we lost everything.”

Since the fire, Andrews has lived on his property in a camper. When his home burned down, so did his business. Andrews makes furniture, and his home also acted as his showroom.

“I redid the ceiling, the walls. It used to be a daycare when I first moved in and I turned it into a showroom, and then I turned it into a house,” said Andrews. “I did the kitchen, the living rooms, the bedrooms, all the furniture. I didn’t just lose stuff that I could go buy, it’s like stuff that I had handcrafted and antiques that I bought and incorporated into my art.”…
