Albuquerque man accused of killing pregnant girlfriend to stay in custody

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man accused of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend will remain behind bars until trial.

Police said that 33-year-old James Candelaria told them that he and Destiny Benavidez were drinking at home on Edith near Gibson when she got upset over another woman. Candelaria claimed he blacked out but woke up holding Benavidez, and she was bleeding from her head.

Benavidez was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries. The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office plans on charging Candelaria with murder…
