ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A taxpayer-funded property continues to sit vacant with no actual plans set for its future. The City of Albuquerque is now seeking input through their architecture firm following a Larry Barker investigation.

Tuesday night, Larry Barker’s story took a deep dive into the home of former Indy 500 champion Bobby Unser, which the city purchased a year and a half ago. The city said the property has historical significance but has not decided what to do with it. Wednesday night, people shared their ideas on what the space could become. “One thing that we’ve been kicking around and everyone in the city seems to be getting excited about is youth auto education center, something that might be an addition to or, attach to, or built within maybe Jerry’s Garage,” said Wes Lansford, the principal architect hired to develop a master plan for the property.
As Barker reported, the Unser property contains two homes, a garage, and a steel warehouse. However, those buildings are largely empty and do not have any memorabilia like race cars, tools, or trophies. The architecture firm handling the site, Wes Lansford Architecture, hosted the meeting.
