ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A new book, written by a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital, is using the state cookie to teach kids about a complex brain disorder.
Dr. Aditi Kantipuly is a physician and visiting scholar at the UNM Department of Neurology. Dr. Kantipuly says Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (CCM) is a rare genetic condition that affects the brain’s function. “What happens when you have a condition like CCM is that it increases your risk for seizures, stroke, and dermatological manifestations, so different changes in skin,” says Dr. Kantipuly. Because it is rare and complex, Dr. Kantipuly decided to publish a children’s book to make the condition easier to explain.

The book focuses on the story of a grandmother and her grandson baking cookies. While they are baking, the grandmother tells her grandson all about her experience with CCM. She details what it is like to go to the hospital and see a doctor, and she explains some of the tests she has undergone.
