North Valley coffee shop determined to open despite crime

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque business aiming to grow in an underserved part of the North Valley keeps battling back against repeated vandalism. “Just one day we came in and just the rock was through it,” said Alanna Armijo, manager of La Luz Coffee shop.

Broken glass is now covered up with wooden boards. That’s the latest problem the soon-to-open La Luz Coffee shop is dealing with at the corner of 12th and Griegos. For over three years, they’ve operated in the parking lot, opening in the pandemic as a drive-thru coffee stand. “It was just a great way for people to come get coffee,” said Armijo.

Manager Alanna Armijo said the shops always dreamed of expanding into their on-site building and finally inched closer to that goal at the end of last year. They closed their drive-thru stand in October after continued vandalism. “We had our water line cut a couple of times. Our power line was cut a few times. People were cutting the power to get copper and sell the copper and get money out of it,” said Armijo.
