ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department says it’s making strides in solving homicide cases, years into a process of overhauling that investigative unit.
Over the last two years, APD says a group of retired police detectives have helped comb through over 60 backlogged homicide cases. That work has helped them make nearly a dozen arrests. “That’s a process of pushing individuals to get a case over the finish line, and I think that’s one of the things we’ve lacked over the years in the Albuquerque Police Department,” said APD Chief Harold Medina.

Touting two years of changes, APD Chief Harold Medina says his department’s homicide unit is no longer falling behind in solving both new and old cases. “We had been in the fifties in clearance rates for several years and when you’re looking at 70, 80, 90 homicides, that quickly starts to become hundreds and hundreds of victims,” said Chief Harold Medina.
