Teen pleads guilty in deadly Albuquerque shooting

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque teen, Lorenzo Lovato, took a plea deal in connection to a deadly shooting on July 4, 2023. Lovato pleaded guilty to second degree murder with a firearm enhancement, armed robbery and being a minor in possession with a handgun.

According to homicide detectives, then 14,-year-old Lovato, 16-year-old Luis Diaz and 15-year-old Micalas McClendon Jr. had arranged to purchase drugs from Gamboa, but actually were setting her up to be robbed. When Gamboa arrived near Kathryn and Columbia, she was shot and killed in the driver’s seat of her car. Detectives used social media conversations, witness information, and surveillance video to piece together the information leading to the arrests.

A sentencing date for Lovato has not yet been set.
