Ghosts of the Old West: Haunted Spots in New Mexico

The American Southwest, with its rugged landscapes and rich history, is home to numerous chilling tales of ghosts that linger in historic towns and establishments. New Mexico, a state teeming with legends from the era of the Wild West, boasts several spots where the past seems to intersect eerily with the present.

KiMo Theater, Albuquerque
One of New Mexico’s most renowned haunted locations is the KiMo Theater in Albuquerque. Tragically marked by a water heater explosion in 1951, which claimed several lives including a young boy named Bobby, the theater is now the site of strange occurrences. Performers at the KiMo often leave treats for Bobby’s spirit, hoping to prevent his mischievous poltergeist activities during shows.

St. James Hotel, Cimarron
Another spectral hotspot is the St. James Hotel in Cimarron. Built in 1872 by Henry Lambert, this hotel witnessed numerous Wild West shootouts, with evidence still visible in its bullet-ridden ceiling. Guests can stay in rooms named after infamous figures like Jesse James and Buffalo Bill Cody. The hotel is believed to be haunted by multiple spirits, including that of T.J. Wright, a gambler murdered after a winning hand, whose spirit reportedly resides in the permanently un-booked Room 18.
