Goats graze the bosque

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The city of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department is hiring equal opportunity grazers. Max Wade, the owner of Galloping Goats has contracted with the City, to release approximately 200 goats into the bosque to reduce the threat from invasive species. Joanna Strange, from the Open Space Division of the Parks and Recreation Department says plants like Russian olive trees and salt cedar, are thriving in the area and must be removed. While it would take a team of volunteers six hours to clear a small patch of land in the bosque, it takes just a couple of hours for the goats. She says, machinery can be disruptive to the ecosystem and can’t reach all the nooks and crannies in the forest that goats can.
