Man identified after dying during Albuquerque police encounter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man was identified after he died during a police interaction on Thursday in Albuquerque .

Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officers were called to an apartment in the 4800 block of McMahon Boulevard, NW, for a man claiming to be suicidal and armed.

A man identified as Mattias Wynkoop, 40, was standing near his truck. Officials claimed he pointed a firearm at them after they arrived. In response, two officers shot at Wynkoop, who got in the truck, and another shot was heard. The truck drove forward and crashed into a wall.

Wynkoop was declared dead by medical responders. A handgun and rifle were found in the truck.

A preliminary autopsy by the Office of the Medical Investigator revealed that Wynkoop shot himself.

According to APD, Wynkoop had previously tried to get officers to shoot him. In 2023, he was allegedly involved in a pursuit and threatened suicide. His firearms were taken away after the “Red Flag Law” was utilized, but now, officials are trying to figure out how he got the other firearms.
