Albuquerque senator seeks to make gun ban in parks, playgrounds permanent

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Time is winding down for this legislative session, and the focus of the governor’s Public Health Order on guns since September is now facing a debate over whether or not it should be a permanent law.

Senate Bill 204 would permanently ban most people from bringing guns to parks and playgrounds. Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto, (D-Abq.) is sponsoring this bill.

It was a shake-up in September when Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s first Public Health Order on guns outlined a temporary firearm ban in Bernalillo County’s public spaces. That quickly got dialed back, only covering public parks and playgrounds. While the move still faces lawsuits in state and federal courts and has even prompted calls for her impeachment, lawmakers are now looking to follow through with the ban through law.

“The governor took the lead with the Public Health Order, but the reality is that that is supposed to be a temporary measure. What the statute seeks to do is to make it the public policy of the State of New Mexico,” Ivey-Soto said.
