Lawmakers consider $85 million for Los Lunas bridge and interchange construction

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Los Lunas, south of Albuquerque, is a rapidly growing community. Recently, Meta expanded its operations in the region, and now officials are looking for ways to improve traffic for the expanding village.

“We have been diligently working on this project, some of you may know, for decades,” Village of Los Lunas Administrator Gregory Martin told lawmakers in a House Transportation and Public Works Committee meeting on Tuesday, February 6. “We are hoping to begin construction later this year.”

The idea is to build a new connection from Los Lunas to I-25 and to construct another bridge over the Rio Grande. Martin said the bridge is “essential” because village residents currently only have one roadway option to go from the village on the east side of the Rio Grande to the freeway running on the west side of the river.

A handful of lawmakers are asking for $85 million via House Bill 286 to move the project forward. So far, the project has already received more than $50 million for engineering, right-of-way acquisition, and construction, according to an analysis by the Legislative Finance Committee.
