Effort to keep felony re-offenders behind bars pending trial renewed in Roundhouse

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – After the Republican-led, governor-backed pretrial detention bill died in committee last month , an Albuquerque Democrat is trying to get a bill through that is similar to the one that was tabled. He is working against the clock to get it to the governor’s desk before the session ends next week.

This new bill deals with automatically holding someone in jail for committing a felony while out of jail on a different felony charge. “What Senate Bill 271 simply says is, when you get picked up for a new felony, you cannot get out until the judges in the previous cases are alerted to the fact that you got arrested for a new felony and have a chance to review your conditions of release,” said Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto, (D-Albuquerque), sponsor of this bill.
